Animal Mortality

Our base policy consists of Full Mortality and Theft coverage’s for your horse, naming you as beneficiary. This is an “All-Risk” policy which will cover death from any cause, subject to certain exclusions which are stated in the policy. The policy will also pay if the animal is stolen during the policy period. Reporting a problem during the policy period automatically triggers a 12-month coverage extension for death due to a reported problem. Reporting a problem after the policy has expired may result in no coverage at all.
No Mortality coverage available for dogs, dolphins, reptiles, bears, or other exotic animals.

The following endorsements are optional and can be added to your Full Mortality and Theft policy. Certain restrictions apply and an additional premium is due. Animals which are used for racing or in race training, are not eligible.

Major Medical

This endorsement is available on animals between the ages of 30-days and 15-years, insured for $1,500 or more. Major Medical will reimburse you for reasonable and customary veterinary treatment charges which are incurred as the result of accidents, injuries, or illnesses. This endorsement carries a deductible of $250 per incident and pays a maximum of $7,500 in veterinary bills per animal per policy period. Certain restrictions apply.

Surgical

This endorsement is available on all animals. Surgical will reimburse you for reasonable and customary veterinary treatment charges which are incurred for surgical treatment (including anesthesia) as the result of accidents, injuries, or illnesses. In addition to surgery, the endorsement will pay up to 35% of the surgical fees for hospitalization, x-rays, medication and lab tests which are necessitated as the result of surgery. This endorsement carries a deductible of $50 per incident and pays a maximum of $5,000 per animal per policy period.

Loss of Use

This endorsement is available on animals aged 90 days thru 12 years and must accompany the purchase of either Major Medical or Surgical. In the event your insured animal becomes totally and permanently incapable of performing the function named on the policy, but is not a humane destruction candidate, you may have a Loss of Use claim. Your veterinarian will advise the company of the animal’s total and permanent condition. If you have a Loss of Use claim, you may elect to collect 50% of the amount the animal is insured for and keep the animal; or 75% of the amount the animal is insured for and the insurance company may either take possession of the animal or the animal may be destroyed.
(A full series of radiographs and flexion tests are required for Company approval prior to the purchase of this coverage.)

Accident, Sickness, Disease Infertility

This endorsement is available on stallions, used for breeding, who have at least one proven season behind them. If your stallion should become permanently impotent, infertile or incapable of servicing mares resulting from an accident, sickness or disease, this coverage will indemnify you.
(Other infertility coverage’s are available on first-year breeding stallions.)

Specified Perils Coverage

This policy is available when Full Mortality and Theft coverage is not desired. This is a ‘named perils’ policy which will indemnify you in the event your insured horse should die as the result of a peril which is named in the insurance policy. A few of the perils insured against are fire, lightning, transportation, accidental drowning, attack by wild animals, and windstorm. Theft is also a covered peril under this policy.

Trip Transit

This is a SHORT TERM policy available when an animal is being shipped and an annual Full Mortality and Theft policy is not desired. The coverage’s are the same as under a Full Mortality and Theft policy (without the 12-month extension).

Horse Farms

Property and Liability

Property coverage is available for dwellings, contents and personal property, barns and other outbuildings. With a ‘farmowners’ policy, you may also schedule your jewelry, furs, guns, machinery, tack, etc. Coverage is limited to premises which contain at least one (1) horse. Cattle and crop operations are not eligible under this program. Legal liability coverage is available as part of the ‘package’ and can extend to cover not only your personal horses, but also a boarding operation, riding instructions and training.

"CHOCOLATE" and "SANKINA," Slowdance Arabians, Littleton, Colorado (303-795-1751).

Horse Owners General Liability

Legal liability protection is available for a small one horse operation or a large breeding farm. Limits available up to $1,000,000 per occurrence. For private horseowners we offer different policies depending on whether you own the premises where the animals are stabled, or you board on premises which you do not own. The policy will make sure you are defended in lawsuits whether substantial or groundless and in most cases pay for all court costs and judgments, subject to the limitations and exclusions stated in the policy.
(For equine businesses, see Equine Liability for Businesses and Clubs.)

Individual Horse Owners Liability

This policy is designed specifically for someone who owns a horse, but boards it on premises which they do not own. Premiums are held low because you do not own the premises also ... only the horse. Coverage protects you for bodily injury or property damage which your horse may cause that you are legally liable for.

Equine Care, Custody and Control

Many liability policies exclude horses in your care, custody and control. A policy has been designed to meet these needs. This is essential for anyone who boards or trains horses, or who is responsible for other people’s horses while showing or racing them. Pays sums you become legally obligated to pay for damage to the horses in your care, custody and control (death, injuries, illnesses). This coverage does not apply to horses you own or lease. In addition to paying for damage to your horses, the policy will defend any suit against you.

EQUINE LIABILITY FOR BUSINESSES & CLUBS

Legal liability coverage is available for the following types of equine businesses:

  • Boarding
  • Riding Instructions
  • Training
  • Pony Rides
  • One- or Two-Day Horse Shows

Our liability policies provide a legal defense in the event you are sued for an accident arising as the result of your insured equine business.

In addition to your completed application, the underwriters request a specimen Release/Hold Harmless agreement. Many of the states have now passed Equine Activity Limited Liability Laws. Insurance companies require that your Release/Hold Harmless agreement be in compliance with the laws of your state of residence.

Remember: In order to receive the full protection of the law in your state, you must be in compliance with the law. Just because a law is in force, this does not stop persons from filing a lawsuit against you. KNOW THE LAW!!!
